About the Book

Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) hat die Ethik als Theorie der Strukturen und Formen der geschichtlichen Welt konzipiert. Seine Entwürfe dieser "Wissenschaft von den Prinzipien der Geschichte", die im Zusammenhang mit Vorlesungen ausgearbeitet und erst nach seinem Tod veröffentlicht worden sind, haben für seine Philosophie wie für seine Theologie grundlegende Bedeutung.
About the Author: Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher kommt als Sohn eines Pfarrers 1768 in Breslau zur Welt. Nach einer Ausbildung in der Herrnhuter Brüdergemeinde beginnt er 1787 das Studium der Philosophie in Halle und wird 1796 Prediger an der Berliner Charité. Dort kommt er mit dem Kreis der Romantiker in Berührung und beginnt mit der Übersetzung von Platons Werken. Über die Religion. Reden an die Gebildeten unter ihren Verächtern erscheint 1799 anonym und wird sogleich als Neuansatz gegenüber der mit der Aufklärung entstandenen Kluft zwischen positiver und natürlicher Religion gewertet. Mit Humboldt widmet sich Schleiermacher ab 1807 der Gestaltung der neuen Universität in Berlin und wird 1810 Professor für Theologie und Philosophie. Als philosophisches Hauptwerk gilt die in Vorlesungen erarbeitete, aber nie fertiggestellte Ethik, die untersucht, wie sich das menschliche Handeln in der Natur zu einer vernünftigen Einheit fügt. In den Vorlesungen über Dialektik entwickelt Schleiermacher die Grundlegung eines eigenständigen Systementwurfs, der sich von Fichte und Schelling abgrenzt und zu dem Hegelschen in Konkurrenz tritt. Anschließend an die Methodenlehre der Dialektik und Ethik, erweitert Schleiermacher die Hermeneutik in einer Vorlesungsreihe zu einer allgemeinen Lehre vom Verstehen und zu einer zentralen philosophischen Disziplin. Nach ausgedehnten Reisen in seinen letzten Lebensjahren stirbt Schleiermacher 1834 an einer Lungenentzündung und wird unter größter öffentlicher Aufmerksamkeit beigesetzt.
