L'auteur s'interesse ici a la personnalite de l'enfant romain: sa place reelle et symbolique dans l'histoire, ses rapports avec sa famille, avec le monde adulte, avec la cite et sa structure sociologique, sa vie enfin, de sa naissance a sa mort, en passant par son education et ses jeux. Mais la vie quotidienne n'est pas le propos central du livre elle participe a une confrontation entre les textes porteurs de discours et les realites concretes pour fonder une histoire de l'enfance qui, entre la fin de la Republique et la fin de l'Empire romain suit les etapes d'une decouverte progressive de l'enfance et des sentiments qu'elle suscite. Le livre analyse les questions que pose l'enfant au monde adulte: que signifie aimer un enfant ? Ou aimer les enfants ? Quelle part prennent dans cet amour l'erotisme, la passion, la volonte, l'egoisme ou l'abnegation? L'ouvrage est assombri par les violences subies par les enfants (infanticide, exposition, chatiments corporels), et illumine par le sourire de l'enfant virgilien qui, dans les bras de sa mere semble prefigurer l'Enfant Jesus. Entre la lumiere et l'ombre, il se presente comme une oeuvre de sympathie et d'humilite qui cherche a faire reflechir sur ce qu'est un enfant pour nous, pourquoi nous l'aimons et de quel amour, pourquoi sa mort nous accable, pourquoi nous avons des enfants . Eminent specialiste de la Rome antique, Jean-Pierre Neraudau (1940-1998) fut professeur a l'Universite de Reims. Ancien directeur de la collection Realia, il a publie plusieurs essais historiques aux Belles Lettres: La Jeunesse romaine, Urbanisme et metamorphoses de la Rome antique, ainsi que deux romans, Les Louves du Palatin et Le Mystere du Jardin romain
