Dionysos, devenu dieu, comme Penthee refusait d'accepter ses mysteres, rendit folles les soeurs de sa mere et les forca a ecarteler le corps de Penthee, tel est le resume donne par Aristophane le grammairien d'une des pieces, avec Medee, les plus belles et les plus cruelles du repertoire antique. La scene se deroule a Thebes, ville d'ou, selon le mythe, serait originaire le dieu de l'extase et des mysteres. Au soir de sa vie, Euripide livre au spectateur une reflexion profonde et complexe sur le theatre lui-meme, puisque Dionysos est le dieu de la tragedie et sur la religion: malheur a qui ne croit pas au dieu, il sera mis en charpie. Quelle est la lecon a tirer de ce mythe? Est-ce la raison que les pretres et leurs correligionaires assassinent en la personne de Penthee? Ou bien faut-il voir la punition d'un mecreant, et peut-etre l'angoisse d'un homme vieillissant, et bien souvent accuse d'impiete? Au lecteur de choisir face a ce chef-d'oeuvre de la litterature grecque et qui constitue en outre pour nous un precieux temoignage concernant les cultes dionysiaques. Notre edition des oeuvres completes d'Euripide a choisi d'isoler cette piece en la presentant dans un volume a part. La notice introductive replace le texte dans l'ensemble de l'oeuvre du poete en la situant lors du sejour d'Euripide en Macedoine, chez le tyran Archelaos. Le poete serait alors age de plus de 70 ans. La question de la religion, complexe pour celui que l'on surnomme volontiers le Voltaire grec est etudiee en detail, de meme que les liens avec les autres poetes ayant raconte l'histoire de Dionysos, notamment Eschyle, auteur de deux tetralogies dionysiaques, aujourd'hui perdues, l'une sur Lycurgue et l'autre sur Penthee. L'histoire de la tradition manuscrite est relatee brievement, tandis que des notes accompagnent la lecture. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi des fragments attribues aux Bacchantes ainsi que des fragments papyrologiques. Tome VI. 2eme partie
