Wir leben in Zeiten des Krieges, in denen Grundideen der russischen Orthodoxie eine zentrale Rolle bei militarischen Angriffen gegen den Westen und antiwestlicher Propaganda spielen. Diese Ideen haben eine lange Geschichte nicht nur in der russischen Orthodoxie, sondern auch in anderen orthodoxen Kirchen, oft als Reaktion auf westliche Ubergriffe. So ist die Geschichte der russischen Orthodoxie zum Teil auch eine Geschichte der scharfen Konfrontation zwischen dem Osten und dem Westen, die mit starken internen Spannungen einherging. Im 19. Jahrhundert nutzte Joseph Julian Overbeck (1821-1905) diese Spannungen, um sich von den westlichen Kirchen zu trennen und sich zum grossen Erstaunen seiner Zeitgenossen zur Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche zu bekennen. Diese Loyalitat war der Vision einer westlichen liturgischen Rhythmusorthodoxie geschuldet, die sich nicht nur nicht verwirklichte, sondern Overbeck auf die russische Politik beschrankte. Entgegen fruherer Untersuchungen, die ausschliesslich Overbecks Idee einer Westlichen Orthodoxie in den Blick nehmen, beleuchtet Panteleimon Champidis seine Biographie auf der Grundlage bislang nicht genutzter Archivalien (besonders aus der Korrespondenz) und wurdigt seine katholische Phase ebenso wie seine protestantische Phase als eigenstandige Grossen im Verlauf seiner Entwicklung hin zur Orthodoxie. Champidis Darstellung endet nicht mit Overbecks Konversion und dem Scheitern seiner Vision einer Orthodoxie westlicher Pragung, sondern versteht seine Idee von einer vorbestimmten Stellung Russlands als einen weiteren Schritt, der auf das vermeintliche Scheitern einer westlichen Orthodoxie folgte. Overbeck entdeckte die Orthodoxie in ihrer rein ostlichen Form fur sich und wurde in seiner eigenen Person zur Gegenprobe seiner Vision.
