About the Book

The handbook on lovingly and successfully parenting your three-to-five year old child. The handbook that didn't come with them. You can rapidly become a far more joyful parent, foster your young child's enthusiasm, cultivate a sense of cooperation, and truly connect with your child by coming Eye to Eye with them. Eye to Eye is a touching, practical, and often humorous book that centers on loving, respecting, and honoring your children. Based on Gloria Walther's over 30 years of guiding three to five-year-old children in mastering a wide range of life and social skills, Eye to Eye teaches parents how to be the happy and loving parents they truly want to be. It is centered around Gloria's numerous, highly entertaining and extremely effective teaching stories. As such, it is a both informative and empowering read. It tackles a wide variety of situations and behaviors, teaching parents and educators the importance of presenting children with choices, of following a child's lead, and of teaching children the rules of effective social interaction. It shows how to stimulate and support a child's passion, and how to use music, art, color, and sound in a child's holistic development. Parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends will learn the importance of speaking softly, honestly, and directly to children, and really listening to what a child has to say. Three to five-year-olds are capable of so much - learning, sharing, cooperating, creating, problem solving - yet adults often find themselves without the tools to know how to bring out the best in their youngest. Eye to Eye provides these tools.
About the Author: Gloria is an "Air Force Brat" who grew up with her parents, brother, and sister in England, France, and the U.S. She also spent a good deal of time with her large extended family, which still includes 22 cousins. Through these close relationships, she was able to observe and learn a great deal about the process of growing up and the nature of childhood relationships. These family ties re¬main close to this day. When Gloria was 27, after the death of her husband, she decided to devote the rest of her life to developing and practicing a uniquely effective way of leading young children to grow into the magnificent beings that they truly are. She'd had a powerfully empathetic understanding of young children all of her life, and she based her approach on this, tempering it through academic studies and practice. Gloria prepared herself for her mission through extensive study centered around home life, childhood development, and early childhood education, receiving an M.A. in Family Life Development from Florida State University, and a PhD in Early Childhood Development from USC. Throughout the years of formal education, extensive research, and student teaching in various preschools, Gloria's essential approach always remained the same: "I read everything I could find written by the early childhood theorists, threw that information against my heart, and let go of anything that didn't stick." Her first "teaching" assignment was in the USC Preschool. She moved to the Portuguese Bend Coop Nursery School two years later. After four years there she became the Director of the St. Thomas Parish Preschool in Hollywood, California. She also taught many classes at UCLA in Curriculum Development and Classroom Management (Preschools), as well as creating and teaching classes there in Emergent Literacy. Gloria found that a great deal of her approach also rubbed off on the parents, many of whom urged her to write these books. In 1996, supported by an extensive community of concerned par¬ents of young children, Gloria founded The Walther School (also in Hollywood)-a preschool that fully manifests her approach. What is Gloria's approach? It centers around the loving of young children, respect for them, honoring of them, and continually en¬couraging their participation. She feels extremely blessed to have so many incredible children surrounding her in school every day, and to have the remarkable support of their parents, and the en-tire Walther School parent community.
