About the Book

Una señora de 57 años tiene un romance con un joven de 22. Cuando el amorío se complica, ella lo acusa de haberle robado un montón de dinero. La denuncia prospera, se entabla un juicio, comienzan las averiguaciones y salen al descubierto las cartas privadas que ella le escribió a él. Lo relatado ocurre en Caracas en 1836 y se convierte en chisme y comidilla de la ciudad por una razón muy sencilla: la señora en cuestión es María Antonia Bolívar, la hermana del Libertador, mientras que el presunto ladrón y depositario de su afecto es un joven humilde llamado José Ignacio Padrón, quien se gana la vida fabricando peinetas. A través de cada uno de los personajes que forman parte de esta historia, es posible conocer las mudanzas ocurridas en nuestra sociedad. El desarrollo del juicio, las declaraciones de los testigos, la actuación de los abogados, las respuestas y desplantes de María Antonia, la actitud del juez, el desenlace del episodio, nos acercan a los difíciles años que siguieron a la guerra de independencia justo cuando comenzaba el largo y complejo camino de construir la Venezuela republicana.
About the Author: Inés Quintero es historiadora. Estudió en la Universidad Central de Venezuela y obtuvo los títulos de licenciada, magíster y doctora en Historia. Fue investigadora en el Instituto de Estudios Hispanoamericanos de la UCV, en el cual se inició como preparadora hasta alcanzar la categoría de profesora titular, el más alto escalafón universitario. Obtuvo una beca Fulbright para investigar en la Biblioteca del Congreso en Washington; estuvo un año en la Universidad de Oxford, en la Cátedra Andrés Bello, y es individuo de número de la Academia Nacional de la Historia. Su trayectoria académica se ha visto acompañada por una larga lista de iniciativas y publicaciones en las cuales se puede advertir un continuo esfuerzo por acercar a los lectores la historia de manera amena y rigurosa. Entre sus libros más conocidos están: El ocaso de una estirpe, La conjura de los mantuanos, El último marqués, El sucesor de Bolívar, La palabra ignorada, El fabricante de peinetas.
