About the Book

Face The Music: The Devil's In The Details (Kindle Edition) reviewed by Soull Purple. 26th Feb 2013. Ok, just finished reading 'face the music - the devil's in the detail' Woww!...that blew me away, ... Where do I start, Ok, I've read across many styles and genres over the years and am always on the look out for new material, these are the 3 things I suppose that cry out to me on my search for satisfaction... 1.To learn something new, ... 2.To be pulled into a world that I don't have to struggle to understand, ... 3.To be completely engrossed and entertained. This is the first of hopefully many stories written by new comer E.Sherriff (NX6) First of all, Sherriff is an authentic Londoner (not a tourist or wannabe) writing about London, in vivid detail, so for those of us who aren't, and want to understand the feel of the bigsmoke from an authentic point of view - here it is. That to me is a major plus point, the descriptive nature and authenticity projected about inner city London is fantastic. The writer takes us into a seedier side of the city as he displays brilliantly - youth gang culture, the 'Rap' game, and all of the associated 'ill's' linked to this industry, also street culture, the related language / slang, gang territory, how it is run, and governed, and why. The character development here is stunning, u really feel as tho u know these characters, and the authenticity of these characters, leaves u with no doubt that they are - or must be based on real experiences and ppl. The word authentic I feel will be used often to describe all elements of this book by many. A running theme for any who know and understand London's inner cities and great for those who don't know it but want to learn more about it. And I say that to all ages and cultures worldwide. The supernatural element to this story is also well thought through and researched. It works extremely well as part of this authentic view into inner city London. The occult theme becomes entwined into the authenticity of the story, in other words, the writer very convincingly marries these 2 elements and makes for a very gripping realistic story. Its actually incredibly believable. Supernatural? Streets? Rap? Believable? I hear u thinking, ... Yes! Not even most of the accomplished writers out there in the world can bring these elements together successfully... Yet this is E.Sherriff's first book! I'm not going to give much of this story away, I believe the beauty of this book is certainly in the reading. The journey Sherriff takes u on is pretty breathtaking! And detailed! The humour is equally brilliant! This is something I can easily see translated onto the big screen, with the careful eye of a competent director and screen writer obviously, ... This is not the type of work we will want to see Messed up by lazy amateurs masquerading as pro's, or some spotty little wannabe from elsewhere romanticising this with his/her fleeting and inexperienced view of London. I recently saw a series on the UK channel 4 network called 'Utopia' ... I remember thinking that I'll never get back those wasted seconds 'why did I punished myself'... Well I subscribe to an amazing thing called Karma! And it seems the karma pay back for me has come in the form of this book and writer! Karma is real!... Face the music - the devil is in the detail is the first literary work of an authentic writer of realism. He is able to incorporate other genres into his frame convincingly! and makes them sit effortlessly with his style of authentic realism. I just hope this work reaches a readership across the board, I know they will be grateful for it.
