About the Book

Sara is a former international adventure racer and Everest climber working as a detective after her husband left. The brutal murder of a knight at the Renaissance fair will be her most grueling case. If she doesn't solve it, her boss could lose the mayoral race to Foster, a drug lord whose campaign decries the police chief's incompetence. Her boss sticks Sara with Ryker, a paunchy big city cop hellbent on taking Foster down since NYPD failed. How can she work with this alien who scorns exercise and has never set foot in a wilderness? They have only nine days until the fair ends and 800 rennie artisans and entertainers move on.

The knight was a womanizer and bully giving motives to a motley crew of suspects: Knights Invincible, Scots, Roma, a crazed Viking, adulterous queen, and belly dancer's lover. After-hour parties in the Scot and Roma camps are rife with the power struggles and romantic intrigues that interweave their lives. Sara and Ryker are also dealing with the specter of their own past traumas and family problems.

More in tune with nomadic rennies, Sara pursues evidence in the Renaissance village. She sifts through DNA, daggers with guards matching an imprint on the knight's chest, and traces of a mysterious tattoo. Out of his comfort zone at the fair, Ryker goes after dirt on Foster to derail the campaign. Their differing investigative styles coalesce in a final scene in the Okefenokee Swamp. A shocking detail forces Sara to face her past. Can she make the right decision?

A Fair Knight Slain makes the most of its setting, drawing readers in for an entertaining mystery with medieval-style mayhem. BlueInk Review

An engrossing final act leads to a worthy denouement and the possibility of more adventures with Sara and/or Ryker. A sensational gumshoe and vivid setting elevate this whodunit. Kirkus Reviews

In a distinctive setting, A Fair Knight Slain finds its murder-investigating cast overcoming past traumas and recognizing the importance of their families. Forward Reviews

Libraries and readers seeking a mystery flavored with emotional connections and undertones . . . will find much to like in A Fair Knight Slain. A simmering mystery firmly embedded with Roma, Renaissance influences and history. Midwest Review.
