About the Book

Der Frankenhäuser Seifensiedersohn und Barbierchirurg W.G. Teuthorn wird 1835 Kieler Bürger und verbindet sich durch Heirat mit der Familie seines Zunftkollegen Nagel. Er bringt seine mindestens 300-jährige thüringische Familiengeschichte mit in den Norden, wo sein Schwiegervater Nicolaus Nagel durch Heirat mit der aus Fünen stammenden Charlotta M. Fløcke den Genen der aus Wilster stammenden Familie das dänische Element hinzugefügt hatte. Zwischen 1869 und 1895 wandern 3 Nagelsöhne und 5 Teuthornkinder nach Nordamerika aus. Der Prozess des Einlebens in die Vereinigten Staaten über das Erlangen der Staatsbürgerschaft bis zur Assimilation der heutigen Familien wird nachgezeichnet. Das um die Jahrhundertwende wirtschaftlich explodierende Chicago und das Manhattan am Hudson gegenüberliegende Hoboken mit seinen Piers für die Einwandererschiffe von Norddeutschem Lloyd und HAPAG werden aus der Augenhöhe der Zeitgenossen beschrieben. Natürlich müssen die Schilderungen vor der Privatsphäre der heute weit verzweigten Familie Halt machen. - Familiengeschichte forscht hier nicht so sehr nach möglichst vielen weit zurückreichenden Ahnen, sondern führt von vorhandenen Wurzeln nahe an das Heute heran. Ein Einblick in das heutige Familiengeflecht muss allerdings der Kommunikation unter den Mitgliedern der Großfamilie vorbehalten bleiben.
About the Author: Durch seine Arbeit im Personalwesen einer international tätigen Firma hat P.T. die Eigenheiten und Reize Deutschlands und seiner Menschen zwischen Hamburg und Bayern, Nordrhein-Westfalen und Berlin kennengelernt und schätzt ihre Vielfalt. Nach eigenem Erleben in Mexiko und Griechenland meint er, der Blick von außen schärfe und relativiere den Blick auf die Verhältnisse in der Heimat. Gleiches gilt für den Blick in die Vergangenheit. In der Geschichte seiner Familie, die er seit vielen Jahren mit dem Handwerkszeug des Historikers erforscht, spiegeln sich diese Erfahrungen. Mit einer nur tabellarischen Darstellung von Vorfahren- und Nachfahrenlisten kann er sich nicht anfreunden. Da ihm der geschichtliche und soziale Hintergrund wichtig ist, versucht er die Ergebnisse seiner Familiengeschichtsforschung mit Beschreibungen verständlich zu machen. Hierzu äußert er sich neben herkömmlicher Kommunikation mit Buch und Aufsatz in genealogischen Zeitschriften auch per Website und Blog.
