Jahrhunderts, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Jahrhunderte lang bekleideten sich die Menschen zum Schutz vor Kälte, Hitze oder ähnlichen Umwelteinflüssen. Als man aber nicht mehr länger Bärenfelle trug und man mehrere verschiedene Garderoben zum Wechseln besaß, bemerkte man recht schnell, dass die Kleidung weitaus mehr zu bieten hatte als den rein funktionalen Schutzaspekt. Man konnte nun auch Gefühle und innere Stimmungen unausgesprochen ausdrücken und dies ist bis heute so geblieben. Nach wie vor trägt man in unserer Kultur Schwarz bei Trauerfällen, Weiß bei Hochzeiten oder elegante, luxuriöse Kleidung zu festlichen Anlässen. Heute ist es jedoch zudem möglich, offen seine Gefühle zu äußern, ohne dies subtil über die Kleidung tun zu müssen. Es gibt bei weitem keine so strengen Konventionen mehr wie im 19. Jahrhundert, die die angemessene Kleidung vorschreiben. Im 19. Jahrhundert war es vor allem für die Frau noch schwierig, ihre Gefühle und Einstellungen auf direktem Weg zu äußern, sofern sie nicht dem traditionellen Rollenbild entsprachen. Aus diesem Grund musste die Frau eine passende Möglichkeit finden, dies versteckt zu tun. Mit der Wahl der Farbe und der Art ihrer Garderobe konnte die Frau ihrer Umwelt mitteilen, in welcher seelischen Verfassung sie sich befand. Edna Pontellier ist eine dieser Frauen.
