.... Il fattore, un certo Tito Esposito, proveniente da una cascina posta sul monte Corno del Diavolo in Comune di Capraverde, per una serie di malaugurate coincidenze, si viene a trovare ad affrontare situazioni per lui rovinose.
Come fattore nel Palazzo Marchesale andava bene, anzi benissimo.
La sorte però lo portò a vivere alcune circostanze delicate.
Due in particolare gli cambiarono la vita.
La prima quando scomparve in un inghiottitoio dentro un tunnel sconosciuto che dalle cantine del palazzo marchesale sbucava nella cappella dei nobili nel cimitero del paese.
Scomparve in quell'inghiottitoio mentre tentava nel buio totale del tunnel di aggredire e violentare una piacente giovane domestica del marchese, Angela.
Questa si difese strenuamente e Tito al buio perse l'equilibrio e sparì in un profondissimo inghiottitoio.
Caso volle che, frasche, arbusti, erba e tanto muschio, mentre precipitava, crearono una specie di tappo che frenarono la sua caduta dopo diversi metri.
Nella caduta si procurò diverse ferite e divenne muto e smemorato.
Mangiando e curandosi col muschio sopravvisse e riuscì a tornare fuori.
Ma, muto e smemorato, pieno di sporcizia e con barba e capelli lunghi ed incolti, visse da mendicante, chiamato Sorriso, nei paraggi di Montepiesco e Capraverde.
Si ubriacava spesso e, a causa di una ubriacatura solenne, una notte nell'uscire dal suo giaciglio in un trullo diroccato per fare la pipì, inciampò al buio e cadde malamente sbattendo la testa contro un albero d'ulivo.
Questo incidente gli fece tornare sia la parola che la memoria.
Per ragioni di sua opportunità si mantenne barbone fingendosi ancora muto e smemorato.
Ma per strana sorte un giorno che mendicava davanti all'entrata del Cimitero di Montepiesco, vide una bella domestica del fattore che conosceva, Dora.
Gli vennero strani pensieri.
La voglia di stare con lei era tanta che un giorno organizzò, ancora nello stesso tunnel dove era precipitato tempo prima nell'inghiottitoio, un incontro con Dora, l'aggredì e la violentò.
Tutti gli diedero la caccia.
Alla fine si arrese e venne imprigionato.................
