About the Book

Ciertamente Herrera ha vivido en París por más de 50 años. Es un ecuatoriano que ha creado toda su obra fuera del país, y que no ha perdido su identidad, ni su sentido del humor, todo lo contrario ha sabido acercar la idiosincrasia costumbrista de su país y a través de su obra literaria ofrecer una sutil mezcla de realidad y ficción poética. La poesía de Herrera goza de la absoluta libertad de expresión.

Cómo analiza la académica de la Universidad de Paris Nanterre, Emmanuelle Sinardet. Herrera es un electrón imposible de asociar a una generación o estilo. Goza de independencia y como creador es un "Todo Terreno". En una posición de reflexión permanente sobre el poder del arte en el tiempo y en la sociedad, trabaja con una urgencia vital en constante desafío. Siempre alejado de los cánones crea su propia expresión poética.

Enfatiza Sinardet que su obra nace de un fructífero diálogo entre la narrativa, cuento autobiográfico/ficción, teatro y poesía, de ahí que con versatilidad pasa de la poesía a la novela, de la novela al cuento corto, al teatro y al dibujo gráfico de simbologías y figura abstractas, que bien podrían representar esa multitud de personajes reflejados en su obra.

Al leer la poesía de Herrera se disfruta porque es pura, no busca la metáfora alambicada, sus textos se estructuran a partir de pequeñas narraciones en versos o hiperbreves relatos. Se dejan leer por que son directos y claros, no se necesita volverla a leer. Cuentan historias cortas, relatos yuxtapuestos, como un flash luminoso, pinceladas espontáneas del momento. Es lo que él llama "poesía directa". El carácter de su narrativa es autónoma, relatos compuestos como un mosaico para formar un árbol en su conjunto.

En su discurso interactúa con sus personajes, se adentra en ellos, indaga en sus biografías, les hace preguntas y trata de sacarles información. Como describe Sinardet, va moldeando una obra creada en la memoria que progresivamente está en la espiral del "presente en París y del pasado en el Ecuador donde él se alimenta y nutre a sus personajes".
