Der Briefwechsel des Ludwig Klein und seiner Frau Friederike aus den Jahren 1940 - 1945 ist gleichsam ein doppeltes Kriegstagebuch. Er, Lehrer aus einem kleinen sächsischen Städtchen, beschreibt seinen Soldatenalltag als Hauptwachtmeister in einem Dorf im besetzten Frankreich und kommentiert den Kriegsverlauf an allen Fronten. Erstaunlich ist, wie offen er über die militärische Lage und seine Einschätzungen berichtet. Sie, Hausfrau und Mutter von zwei Kindern, schildert die Nöte einer Frau, die plötzlich in die Rolle einer Alleinerziehenden hineingeworfen wird. Hofft sie zuerst auf Luxusmitbringsel aus Frankreich, so bekommt sie mit der Zeit immer stärker den Krieg zu spüren: die ersten Versorgungsengpässe, Not und Kälte. Zitternd erlebt sie die ersten Luftangriffe im Keller - und macht sich schließlich Gedanken über das spätere Zusammenleben nach so langer Zeit selbstständigen Handelns. Manche Fehleinschätzung des Soldaten Klein ruft heute Kopfschütteln hervor, die eine oder andere Aussage und Formulierung mag uns aufstoßen. Doch wer sich mit Vergangenheit beschäftigt, darf das nicht ausblenden. Diese zum Teil sehr persönlichen Briefe sind ein beeindruckendes zeitgeschichtliches Dokument über die Sorgen und Nöte, das Hoffen und Verzweifeln zweier Menschen, stellvertretend für viele Millionen. "Feder des Todes" basiert auf wahren Begebenheiten. Alle vorkommenden Namen wurden aus Rücksicht der Hinterbliebenen geändert. Jedoch die Orte und Handlungen entsprechen dem Briefwechsel des Soldaten Klein.
About the Author: Karl Seidel wurde 1931 geboren. 1995 trug er Briefe, Berichte und Fotos zusammen und entschloss sich den Traum, ein Kriegstagebuch des 1. und 2. Weltkrieges, seines Großvaters wirklich werden zu lassen. Bis 1998 beschäftigte er sich mit der Ahnenforschung der Familie Klein und fertigte ein Rohmanuskript an. Jedoch verstarb er im Jahre 1999. Seine direkten Nachfahren (Kinder) hatten für sein Hobby kein Verständnis und wollten mit den Niederschriften nichts zu tun haben. So geschah es, dass das Rohmanuskript lange hin und hergereicht wurde. Schließlich nahm sich sein Enkel der Aufgabe an und rettete somit ein Stück Geschichte.
