About the Author: Egbert Brieskorn war Professor für Mathematik in Göttingen und Bonn und Gastprofessor an einer Reihe ausländischer Universitäten. Als Mathematiker wurde er besonders durch seine grundlegenden Beiträge zur Singularitätentheorie komplexer Hyperflächen bekannt. Er initiierte in Bonn das Projekt "Felix Hausdorff - Gesammelte Werke"(10 Bände, 2001-2020) und war Leiter der fünfköpfigen Gruppe der für die Gesamtedition verantwortlichen Herausgeber. Viele Jahre hat er an einer Biographie Hausdorffs gearbeitet. Diese sollte im Rahmen der Hausdorff-Edition erscheinen; bei seinem Tod lag etwa die Hälfte des Werkes vor. E. Brieskorn ist auch Autor origineller und erfolgreicher Lehrbücher. Für seine jahrzehntelange Arbeit im Natur- und Artenschutz erhielt er das Verdienstkreuz am Bande der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

Walter Purkert war Professor für Mathematikgeschichte in Leipzig und Gastprofessor in Wuppertal und an der Pace University New York. In Bonn lehrte er Geschichte der Mathematik und gab als Ausgangspunkt des Editionsprojektes ein Findbuch mit inhaltlichen Beschreibungen von Hausdorffs äußerst umfangreichem Nachlass heraus. Danach war er hauptamtlich als Koordinator der Edition tätig, gehörte zur Gruppe der verantwortlichen Herausgeber und verfasste Beiträge zu einer Reihe von Bänden der Edition. Nach Egbert Brieskorns Tod stellte er in mehrjähriger Arbeit die Hausdorff-Biographie fertig. Von ihm stammt auch eine Biographie Georg Cantors. Er ist Korrespondierendes Mitglied der Académie Internationale d'Histoire des Sciences in Paris.
