Der vorliegende Band versammelt Forschungsbeiträge und Diskussionsergebnisse der Internationalen Konferenz Exil - Glaube und Kultur: 1933-1945. «Der Tag wird kommen» (Lion Feuchtwanger), die im Frühling 2009 an der Universität Wien von der International Feuchtwanger Society und dem Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien (Schwerpunkt für Visuelle Zeit- und Kulturgeschichte) veranstaltet wurde. Ausgehend vom Leben und Werk Lion Feuchtwangers hatte die Konferenz zum Ziel, anerkannten Forschungsarbeiten sowie neuen Theorieansätzen in der Exilforschung einen Rahmen zu geben.
Diesem Anspruch folgend widmet sich die Publikation in einem ersten Teil Lion Feuchtwangers persönlicher und schriftstellerischer Auseinandersetzung mit «Exil» als Lebensform wie auch als philosophisch-intellektuellem Begriff. Der zweite Teil befasst sich mit intellektuellen, poetischen, politischen sowie religiösen Auseinandersetzungen mit dem «Exil» in Leben und Werk von SchriftstellerInnen, KünstlerInnen und Intellektuellen. Die Beiträge im dritten Teil finden ihren Schwerpunkt in der Erforschung und Verarbeitung von «Exil» im Leben und Werk exilierter MusikerInnen wie z. B. Hanns Eisler und Eric Zeisl und Theatergrößen wie Hans Wengraf und Bertolt Brecht, oder Filmschaffenden wie Arthur Gottlein und William Dieterle.
Der Band führt unterschiedliche Forschungsprojekte und -ansätze der gegenwärtigen internationalen Exilforschung im Dialog um Lion Feuchtwanger zusammen.
About the Author: Frank Stern war langjähriger Leiter des Center for German Studies und des Austrian-German Studies Program an der Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel. Nach zahlreichen Gastprofessuren in den USA und in Deutschland ist er seit 2004 Professor am Institut für Zeitgeschichte an der Universität Wien und leitet dort den Schwerpunkt für Visuelle Zeit- und Kulturgeschichte.
