About the Book

While today's teenagers rarely raise their heads from their PlayStations and Smartphones, Jack's early teenage years saw him dodging bombs in the Blitz. At fifteen he was sailing across a dangerous Atlantic and helping supply a newly liberated Tripoli. Jack's story is not exceptional. He was just one of 'the many.'
About the Author: Jack was almost thirteen when the war started in 1939. He was evacuated to Bridlington, a place which was bombed even before his home town and he returned to the Riley High School in Hull. The school was based at the Technical College in Park Street. This was bombed in May 1941. Whilst still at school he joined the Police Auxiliary Messenger Service, (PAMS). His job was to cycle with messages between civil defence posts during air raids. At fifteen he was in the Merchant Navy sailing through U-boat infested waters aboard a Norwegian vessel. At seventeen he volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm. This morphed into service in the Royal Navy and eventually he became a Royal Marine. He was demobilised at the end of the war and returned to Hull still only twenty years old. He trained as a wireless operator and one trip aboard a Hull trawler was enough. Eventually he settled down in his home city but continued to lead an active life in local sports. He was captain of Hull City Water Polo club and also captained the Yorkshire County team. He played amateur Rugby Union for Hull Ionians and was later the Club President. In 1981 he swam across the River Humber underneath the newly built Humber Bridge wearing just swimming trunks, decrying the new-fangled wet suits. At fifty plus he took a degree course at the Open University and became a Batchelor of Arts. One of Jack's fondest roles was playing Santa Claus for many years in the Call Father Christmas on the Telephone service operated by Hull's municipal Telephone Undertaking. This feature generated many thousands of telephone calls and gave great pleasure to countless children. Now approaching ninety years old, Jack is head of a close knit family and has nine grandchildren.
