: In this book, the author delves into "The Fibrous Plants of India Fitted for Cordage, Clothing, and Paper," providing valuable insights into the cultivation and preparation of Flax, Hemp, and their substitutes. The journey into this subject began a few years ago when the author recognized the potential demand for Indian fibers amid the turbulent state of Europe and decided to revisit the topic in the autumn of 1853. In 1858, John Forbes Royle embarked on a significant exploration of fibers, spurred by the growing demand for Indian fibers in the midst of Europe's tumultuous times. Prompted by Joseph Hume, the Society of Arts invited Royle to compose a paper on Indian Fibers. While juggling various commitments, he presented a lecture on the subject in April 1854. The lecture, subsequently published in the 'Journal of the Society of Arts'. Him undertake the extensive task of compiling comprehensive work on Indian Fibers, surpassing his initial scope. His goal was to provide invaluable insights into fiber cultivation and preparation, particularly regarding Flax, which could prove beneficial to colonists and planters. Royle emphasized the importance of documenting and disseminating information to assist future experimenters and prevent redundant research. About The Author: John Forbes Royle (1798–1858) was a British botanist and materia medica teacher with a fascinating life. After studying under Sangster of Haddington and being inspired by Anthony Todd Thomson to pursue botany, Royle abandoned a military career, joined the East India Company as an assistant surgeon in 1819, and served with the Bengal army. In 1823, he became the Superintendent of the Saharanpur botanical garden, focusing on traditional Hindu medicinal remedies. Returning to England in 1831, he succeeded John Ayrton Paris as a professor at King's College London. His significant contributions include "Illustrations of the Botany and other branches of Natural History of the Himalayan Mounta
