Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Auf den folgenden Seiten soll erst ein allgemeines Bild des Märtyrers projektiert und dargestellt werden, um in einem zweiten Schritt diese allgemeingültigen Aussagen auf Gryphius` spezifische Märtyrerfiguren anzuwenden oder zu kontrastieren. Die vier untersuchten Dramen Leo Armenius, Catharina von Georgien, Carolus Stuardus und Aemilius Paulus Papinianus weisen jeweils eine Gemeinsamkeit auf: der Dramenheld ist zugleich Titelfigur und stirbt als Märtyrer - wie im einzelnen zu zeigen sein wird. Dementsprechend gliedert sich diese Arbeit in drei Teile: einen allgemeinen Part zum Märtyrer, der Darstellung der Märtyrerfigur in Gryphius` vier Dramen (unter Berücksichtigung der Forschungsliteratur) und einer Ausarbeitung des Gryphschen Märtyrerbegriffs. Die einzelnen Tragödien sollen jeweils unter dem Aspekt des Märtyrertodes analysiert werden, um schließlich den für Gryphius eigenen Märtyrerbegriff zu konstruieren. In dieser Schlussbetrachtung soll verdeutlicht werden, inwiefern Gryphius einen von der Tradition unabhängigen Märtyrerbegriff entwickelt bzw. er sich an dem historischen Terminus orientiert. Als Märtyrer wird eine Person bezeichnet, die sich für eine Idee bzw. ihre Überzeugung einsetzt, dafür Nachteile und Verfolgungen in Kauf und sogar den Tod auf sich nimmt. Charakteristisch für jeden Märtyrer ist seine „Standhaftigkeit, sein übermenschlicher Mut, ihre Seele bleibt von den Qualen des Leibes unangefochten, und sie gehen zur Folter, die zum unabdingbaren Bestandteil des Märtyrertodes wurde, wie zu einem Fest". Der Begriff Märtyrer entstammt dem griechischen Wort Martyros, das mit Zeuge übersetzt werden kann. Mit dem Begriff des Zeugen wurden um das Jahr 100 vor allem Christen verbunden, die nach der Lehre Christi lebten. Im zweiten Jahrhundert nach Christi unterlag der Begriff Martyros dann einem Bedeutungswandel; er wurde präzisiert und die Konnotation bezog sich nun vor allem darauf, dass ein Märtyrer für seinen Glauben sterben
