En équilibre précaire entre des années 1950 guindées et des années 1970 en roue libre, les années 1960 ont représenté une décennie de transition pour l'industrie du cinéma. Alors que fusionnent l'art, la consommation de masse et la culture pop, le cinéma est emporté dans une spirale d'énergie psychédélique. Le public est de plus en plus captivé par le petit écran et, après l'abolition du Code de «bonne conduite» auquel étaient jusqu'alors soumis les studios, les réalisateurs se saisissent de leur liberté nouvelle pour explorer les possibilités du cinéma en tant que forme artistique. Comme souvent, ce sont les Européens qui ouvrent la voie, en France avec la Nouvelle Vague de Godard et Truffaut, en Italie avec des films aussi novateurs que le 8 1/2 de Fellini et L'Éclipse d'Antonioni.

Au milieu des années 1960, les États-Unis commencent à leur tour à débrider leur créativité, en particulier dans les films de jeunes réalisateurs underground comme Russ Meyer, John Frankenheimer ou Sam Peckinpah. Dans un autre registre, Mary Poppins et La Mélodie du bonheur viennent clore la glorieuse époque des comédies musicales en grande pompe, tandis qu'un autre genre, le western spaghetti, occupe le devant de la scène. Bond -- James Bond -- apparaît sur le grand écran et Kubrick redéfinit le film de science-fiction avec 2001: L'Odyssée de l'espace.

Même si le terme « féministe » n'a pas été employé à ce moment-là, les années 1960 ont aussi connu des avancées majeures dans la caractérisation des personnages féminins. De Jane Fonda dans Barbarella à la Holly Golightly de Diamants sur canapé, en passant par la Bonnie Parker de Bonnie et Clyde, c'est au cours de cette décennie que les femmes ont abandonné le statut de potiches pour embrasser des rôles complexes et des personnages forts au cinéma.
