About the Book

Parents who intend to home educate their children through high school are often intimidated and apprehensive at the prospect. They may have been successful with phonics, fractions, spelling and US history, but the thought of teaching chemistry, geometry, and English composition is daunting. How can home schooling families navigate the high school years - the years that must be documented on a transcript - without sacrificing the home school lifestyle they have enjoyed through elementary and middle school? Finishing Well is a straightforward and simple guidebook for parents who desire to continue home schooling through high school. It answers four concerns: "What classes should we teach? How do we document our student's coursework on a transcript? Can we issue a diploma ourselves?" And, "How do we prepare our home educated student for college?" Although Finishing Well is written specifically to Washington State families, the philosophy and advice is applicable to home educators living elsewhere. Included are examples of graduation requirements, curriculum planning worksheets, descriptions of high school subjects (along with sample course objectives), charts for record keeping, GPA calculators, sample transcripts, and a home school diploma. The key to completing high school at home is establishing an educational plan and knowing the options available to young adults beyond their high school years. Finishing Well discusses dual credit programs, CollegePlus, CLEP, entrance exams to community colleges, and the university application process. Also included are descriptions of other career opportunities which do not require a college degree.
About the Author: Kim Baumgaertel is a veteran home educator of four and the director of Writing Home, a tool for home educators in Port Orchard, Washington. She keynotes at the popular workshop, "Home Schooling Your High School Student", writes articles for schoolinourjammies.com, and teaches English and science at Writing Home.
