About the Book

"Fire" is the story of Raghuvir Bhardwaj, a sixteen year old refugee who comes to Delhi after the partition from Lahore. "Fire" traces his journey from the crowded refugee camp, through the rented house in Daryaganj to his emergence in society as a powerful business magnate. It tells the tale of his passionate love for Radhika, the only daughter of Barrister Sharma, his friendships with two very different boys- Maninder and Ratan Patel( scion of Ralhan Patel) and his transformation from a shy gauche introvert to a man driven by pain and hate. Raghuvir, or Raghu as he is called, comes to India with nothing more than a bundle of clothes and memories of a happy childhood among his Muslim friends. But here he finds out the truth- about his mother, about their status as refugees. The truth is a bitter pill to swallow. He witnesses his father, a school teacher being humiliated. Worse he sees his father accepting that humiliation. Angered he decides to finance his own college education. With his friend's Ratan's help he finds employment as a tutor. Ironically, he has to tutor Radhika Sharma- the girl he secretly loves. Swallowing his pride he accepts the employment. Two years later when he learns that Radhika is to be married, he loses his control and reveals his true feelings to her. Only to be spurned by her and insulted by her father. "You are nobody," Mr. Sharma tells him. And Raghu cannot forget those words. It propels him to success. Finally Raghu gets his heart's desire. Five years later he marries Radhika. Still things are not quite as he expected them to be. Book II is the story of Raghuvir and Radhika and their children-Agni, Jivan, Chandrika and Yagna. It ends with the death of Raghu's favorite daughter, Yagna. And Raghuvir Bhardwaj, a business tycoon has to admit that he is still "a nobody" inspite of his wealth. All his wealth could not save his daughter. But he survives all the tragedies because he finds hope. In his granddaughter-Mayuri. For she too is touched by fire. He bequeaths his empire to her inspite of opposition from his immediate family especially his son Agni. Fire ends with Mayuri finally acknowledging that legacy and coming to terms with her own inadequacies. Genre: family saga. Words: 82, 585.
