Jaqueline est une jeune fille de 19 ans. Pleine de vie et de rêves, elle pense à un avenir meilleur pour elle et son frère Mauricio, plus jeune pour dix ans. Ils sont les enfants de Rosemary, technicienne en soins infirmiers dans un hôpital public de Vila Velha, Espirito Santo. Le père de Jaqueline est décédé il y a quelques années et sa mère a épousé Dimas, un coureur de jupons et un amateur d'aguardiente. Dimas a abusé sexuellement de Jaqueline depuis son enfance. Il essaie de dire la vérité à sa mère, mais Rosemary, jalouse et possessive, ainsi que très peu sûre d'elle, ne croit pas sa fille. Il tombe pratiquement sans vie et elle et son frère s'enfuient à Rio de Janeiro. Là, Jaqueline ne trouve pas de travail et, à l'invitation de Lamparón, un proxénète de la zone portuaire, elle se prostitue. Par l'intermédiaire de Lamparón, Jaqueline rencontre le député fédéral Igor Lafayete, un homme aux désirs sexuels les plus bizarres. Il soumet Jaqueline à des situations intimes embarrassantes. Elle supporte tout en silence parce qu'elle doit jouer le rôle d'une soeur. Lafayete a un conseiller (dont on apprendra plus tard qu'il est son demi-frère), Cézar. Il tente d'aider Jaqueline dans la mesure de ses moyens et de se libérer des griffes de Lafayete, qui finit par être fasciné par elle, allant même jusqu'à envisager de tuer sa femme, Sofia. Dimas réapparaît, vivant. La rencontre entre lui et Jaqueline provoque une nouvelle tragédie.
Parallèlement, l'histoire d'Alice, mariée à Luciano, fille d'Eva et de Celso, se déroule. Elle a une soeur, Denise. Toutes deux s'entendent très bien jusqu'à ce qu'un secret du passé de leurs parents soit révélé et vienne bouleverser leur relation et leur vie. Alice est née attachée à une autre fille, Bruna. Les siamoises ont été opérées et Bruna n'a pas pu résister, bien qu'elle apparaisse parfois en esprit à Alicia dans son sommeil. Jaqueline et Alicia rêvent l'une de l'autre de manière récurrente.
