Le sentimentalisme qui a eu son epanouissement en Russie dans les annees 1790-1800 a connu son expression la plus brillante dans les oeuvres litteraires et critiques de N.M. Karamzine. Erudit, intellectuel et verse en litterature mondiale, il resta un grand admirateur de Rousseau a travers toute sa carriere litteraire. Les idees psychologiques et sociales de Rousseau habitaient la pensee de Karamzine lorsqu'il ecrivit les "Lettres du voyageur russe." Dans le lyrisme de "La Nouvelle Heloise," il trouve les formules et les moyens necessaires a la creation d'un nouveau genre litteraire: la nouvelle psychologique. Dans son oeuvre, Karamzine a cree la langue -moderne russe-, qui a ete profondement influencee par le style romantique et emotionnel de Rousseau. Grace aux ecrivains comme Karamzine, l'heritage litteraire et philosophique de Rousseau devint une partie integrale du developpement de la culture russe."
About the Author: The Author: Inna Gorbatov is a teacher of French at Dalton School, and an adjunct professor of Russian at Hunter College and New York University. Among her academic honors are a French government scholarship at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France (1979-1980), a CUNY University scholarship at the Graduate Center in New York City (1977-1979) and a USSR government scholarship at Odessa State University in the Soviet Union (1972-1973). She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. Born and raised in Moscow, Inna Gorbatov emigrated to the United States in 1974. Presently she lives and works in New York City.
