Doktorarbeit / Dissertation aus dem Jahr 1988 im Fachbereich Literaturwissenschaft - Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: magna cum laude, Universität des Saarlandes (Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Thomas Mann versteht den "Zauberberg" gattungsgeschichtlich als Ausdruck eines Künstlertums, das sich zwischen den Epochen in der Schwebe hält. Der Schwebezustand zwischen Alt und Neu platziert den Roman gattungsgeschichtlich auf der Nahtstelle zwischen dem traditionellen und dem modernen Gattungstyp. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit stellen sich Fragen nach den weltanschaulichen und historisch-gesellschaftlichen Hintergründen von Manns Modernität und Fragen nach der für den Zauberberg spezifischen Art und Weise der Weiterentwicklung des traditionellen Formkanons der realistischen Schreibweise. Zweifel an der Angemessenheit des herkömmlichen Formkanons machen eine "Revision der Grundlage (seines) Künstlertums" notwendig. "Selbsterforschung und Selbstbehauptung" sind die Ziele eines beginnenden Reflexionsprozesses, der die Darstellungsmöglichkeiten der Gattung im historisch-gesellschaftlichen Kontext einer Welt problematisiert, die, nach der pessimistisch-nihilistischen Grundstimmung der Zeit, "aus den Fugen geraten ist." Die Unterbrechungen der Arbeiten am Zauberberg deuten an, dass die Frage nach den Darstellungsmöglichkeiten präziser gefasst werden muss. Mann arbeitet auf die poetologische Anpassung der Gattung an den veränderten historisch-gesellschaftlichen Kontext hin. Der Wechsel vom Bewusstsein des "selbstverständlich und unbewusst (in sich) ruhenden Seins" zu der Auffassung der "Bewegung alles Ruhenden" markiert im Prozess der romantheoretischen Reflexionen und Entwicklungen den Sprung von der geschlossenen zur offenen Form: Werk und Wirklichkeit bleiben aufeinander bezogen.
