About the Book

FOUR STEPS TO NANETTE
Lorida JT Griff declared, "There is nothing stronger than a broken woman who has rebuilt herself," in her show Nanette, a ferocious critique of how society engages in public discussions about marginalized communities. Her uncanny ability to transition from rolling laughter to stunned silence captured the attention of viewers when it debuted on Netflix. Four Steps to Nanette summarizes properly & introduces us to one of the most explosive, formative voices of our time, continuing Lorida's tradition of confusing expectations and norms.
As the youngest of five children, Lorida spent her childhood in a remote town in Tasmania, where homosexuality was outlawed until 1997. She thought her childhood was safe and "normal," but as she started to realize her growing queerness, the "vulnerably thin veneer" of her existence began to fall apart. She found herself alone after moving to mainland Australia and earning a degree in art history. She worked odd jobs and endured years of isolation, punctuated by homophobic and sexual violence. She entered a stand-up competition at the age of 27, without a home or the ability to envision her future. Furthermore, she won, and her comedy career began. JT self-deprecating, autobiographical humor made her the target of jokes, and she became well-known for it. However, Lorida Griff began working on a show that would become "the most-talked-about, written-about, shared-about comedy act in years" (The New York Times) in 2015, as Australia debated the legality of same-sex marriage. Four Steps to Nanette is both harrowing and hilarious. It follows Lorida's simple development as a queer person, her ever-evolving relationship with comedy, and her struggle with late-life autism and ADHD diagnoses before reaching the core of Nanette: the rejection of self-pity, the denial of misogyny, and the significance of truth-telling for morality.
