Das Buch bietet eine neue Geschichte der Familie in der Ära der bürgerlichen Moderne. Als Quellen dienen Selbstzeugnisse, in erster Linie Tagebücher, aber auch Briefe und autobiographische Texte, von acht Familien aus verschiedenen Milieus im deutschsprachigen Raum. Ein Hauptanliegen ist es, den Bias der historischen Familienforschung für das Bürgertum zu überwinden, ohne aber die Bürgerlichkeit aus der Geschichte völlig herauszuschreiben. Präsentiert werden neue Einblicke in den familiären Alltag in der ländlichen Gesellschaft, im Patriziat, Bildungsbürgertum, Pfarrhaus, Handwerk, Kleinbürgertum, in der Arbeiterschaft mit Migrationshintergrund sowie im Künstlertum und Aussteigermilieu um 1900. Die Quellen stammen zu etwa gleichen Teilen aus der Feder von Frauen und Männern - aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Manche Akteure sind bekannt oder prominent: der 'schreibende Bauer' Ulrich Bräker in der Schweiz, die frühe Sozialdemokratin Adelheid Popp in Österreich, das Künstlerpaar Paula Becker und Otto Modersohn in Deutschland. Die Familiengeschichten der Pfarrfrau Ursula Bruckner-Eglinger oder des Buchdruckergesellen Friedrich Anton Püschmann sind dagegen kaum geläufig. Die Quellen wurden bislang noch nie für eine Geschichte der Familie berücksichtigt.

Das Buch behandelt nicht nur die Familie im engeren Sinne, sondern ausgehend von der Forschung zur Frühen Neuzeit die Häuslichkeit als sozialer Raum. Zur häuslichen Sphäre zählen auch Kinder, Geschwister, Verwandte, Bedienstete, Hausfreunde, Gäste, Mitbewohner und Schlafgänger. Insgesamt sind die häuslichen Beziehungen aus der Sicht der schreibenden Subjekte in vieler Hinsicht um die Ehe zentriert, und zwar die Ehe in vielen Facetten: Eheanbahnung, Eheschließung als Ereignis, Ehealltag, Ehekonflikte, Ehekrisen. Durch die Ausweitung des Blickwinkels auf die Häuslichkeit im weiten Sinne kommt das Buch jedoch zu einem neuen Verständnis der bürgerlichen Familie und darüber hinaus als bisher. Familie wurde im 19. Jahrhundert - auch im Bürgertum - sehr viel offener gelebt als in der Hochzeit der sog. Kernfamilie nach 1945 oder in der Kleinfamilie heute.
