Elle a fait l'objet d'attaques incessantes de la part de l'Église catholique, son adhésion a été interdite aux hommes de l'Église mormone, de l'Armée du Salut et de l'Église méthodiste. Elle est interdite dans un certain nombre de pays.


Les allégations antimaçonniques se heurtent toujours à des difficultés car la franc-maçonnerie refuse de répondre aux attaques. Ce qui est surprenant, c'est le très grand nombre de dirigeants mondiaux, passés et présents, qui étaient et sont membres de la franc-maçonnerie Le roi George VI d'Angleterre, Frédéric le Grand de Prusse et le roi Haakon VII de Norvège. L'histoire des États-Unis regorge de dirigeants qui étaient maçons, tels que George Washington, Andrew Jackson, James Polk, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford et Ronald Reagan.


La Seconde Guerre mondiale a été menée par des dirigeants maçonniques britanniques tels que Winston Churchill et le président américain Franklin D. Roosevelt, ainsi que par des chefs de l'armée américaine comme les généraux Omar Bradley, Mark Clark et George Marshall. Il est pratiquement impossible de savoir par où commencer ou terminer le récit de l'influence maçonnique sur tous les aspects de la vie au cours des 290 dernières années. Cet ouvrage est une tentative de rassembler ce qui rendra relativement facile l'explication de "ce qu'est la maçonnerie".
