La notion d'espace rural est une notion floue. L'espace rural n'est plus seulement un espace agricole, ni un monde replié sur lui-même; l'espace rural est maintenant ouvert sur le monde. Les valeurs traditionnelles de la ruralité ont profondément évolué; les comportements ruraux se transforment et s'ajustent à l'urbanisation ambiante, fortement médiatisée. Les modernités de la ruralité créent une dynamique spatiale qui s'inscrit dans la complémentarité ville-campagne. Du point de vue des communautés rurales, leurs aspirations sont elles aussi ouvertes sur le monde, sur le potentiel d'un monde en mouvement, tout en misant sur le développement local, l'investissement de ressources économiques, l'innovation technologique et la valorisation des ressources humaines. Les contours de la ruralité changent. Or, l'espace rural francophone où vivent des minorités fait face effectivement à plusieurs changements simultanés, voire des défis qui peuvent paraître colossaux: déclin démographique, exode des jeunes, vieillissement de la population, exploitation des ressources naturelles en perte de vitesse, activités économiques au ralenti.

À l'instar de la population canadienne et mondiale, les francophones s'urbanisent de plus en plus; les régions rurales où souvent les francophones se retrouvent entre eux, majoritaires dans leur village ou leur petite ville, ne jouent plus le même rôle traditionnel en tant que territoire protecteur de la survie linguistique pour l'ensemble de la collectivité francophone. Qu'advient-il alors de l'espace rural francophone? Les textes retenus pour ce numéro thématique proposent divers angles d'étude. Il semble en effet pertinent que des solutions soient envisagées, telles que le nouveau projet de communautés rurales au Nouveau-Brunswick et la promotion de l'entrepreneuriat chez les jeunes diplômés universitaires. D'autres études s'intéressent à des réalités différentes, dont les relations entre les écoles françaises hors Québec et leur communauté, l'usage d'Internet par les élèves francophones du nord-est de l'Ontario ou encore la vitalité de la langue française tant dans la Basse-Côte-Nord qu'au Nunavik et en Nouvelle-Angleterre.
