Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus -título original-, es la primera y más famosa novela de Mary Shelley. La autora, nacida el 30 de Agosto de 1797, hija de Mary Wollstonecraft -primera autora feminista de la historia moderna- y William Godwin -primer ideólogo del Anarquismo ilustrado-, y esposa del poeta romántico Percy B. Shelley, mostró desde muy joven sus geniales dotes, convirtiéndose con el tiempo en una de las primeras autoras de Ciencia Ficción de la modernidad, y en una de las referentes más importantes para el género Gótico-Romántico.
Mary Shelley, durante su primera estancia en Suiza, formó parte del famoso Círculo de Villa Diodati, junto a Percy B. Shelley, Lord Byron y John William Polidori. Durante una de sus reuniones, Byron propuso que cada uno de ellos escribiría una historia de terror; y de entre ellos, sólo Mary terminó la suya, aunque Polidori publicaría en 1819 El Vampiro, la primera historia de vampiros de la era moderna. Previamente, tras las correcciones y el Prefacio de Percy B. Shelley, Frankenstein había sido publicado de forma anónima en 1818.
No fue hasta tiempo después, cuando William Godwin publicó una edición de Frankenstein poniendo en portada el nombre de su hija, que Mary Shelley saltó a la fama, siendo reconocida por esta y otras de sus obras, como El Último Hombre, Valperga o Perkin Warbeck. La siguiente versión es una traducción de la edición de 1831, corregida, ampliada, con un nuevo prólogo por la autora e ilustrada.

SINOPSIS: "Un joven científico, Victor Frankenstein, movido por la vanidad y la sed de conocimiento, consigue dar vida a una criatura fabricada a partir de fragmentos de cadáveres. Despertando de su delirio al observar la sobrenatural fealdad del monstruo, Victor lo abandona horrorizado. Viéndose rechazado por su creador y odiado por la humanidad, a pesar de sus reiterados esfuerzos y sus sentimientos de bondad, el Monstruo se consagra a la destrucción y la venganza."
