Erschienen zwischen 1901 und 1934, zeigen die Gedichte und dramatischen Texte Franz Hessels eine im Vergleich zu seiner Prosaproduktion eher unbekannte Bandbreite seines Schaffens. Dieser Umstand macht den vierten Band der Werkausgabe zu einer Fundgrube, die innerhalb der Hessel-Forschung und -Editionsgeschichte einmalig sein dürfte. Von den traditionsverpflichteten lyrischen Anfängen über jene Schaffensphase, die unter dem Eindruck und Einfluss der Schwabinger Bohème und der Künstlerkreise um Stefan George, Karl Wolfskehl und der Gräfin Franziska zu Reventlow stand, bis zur Chanson-Dichtung des 1922 erschienenen "Bänkelbuchs" und den verstreut publizierten letzten Gedichten der 1930er- Jahre - Franz Hessels Entwicklung, seine Themenkreise und die Spannungsfelder seines Werkes werden in dieser Sammlung greifbar und nachvollziehbar. In der Lyrik wie in seinen wenigen dramatischen Texten wird das überaus bewusste Spiel des Dichters mit einem literarischen Ort zwischen Tradition und Moderne, zwischen klassischen Stoffen und seiner ureigenen Form der ironischen Distanz deutlich. Hessels Dramen und szenische Texte werden in dieser Edition erstmals nach ihrem Erscheinen wieder in Buchform und in zum Teil unveröffentlichter Typoskriptfassung publiziert. Für die vorliegende zweite Auflage konnte der editorische Anhang aufgrund neuer Textfunde deutlich erweitert werden.
About the Author: Andreas Thomasberger ist apl. Professor für Neuere deutsche Literatur an der Universität Frankfurt am Main. Er habilitierte sich mit einer Arbeit zur Edition und Interpretation von Hugo von Hofmannsthals Lyrik und ist unter anderem Herausgeber von Werken Hofmannsthals (Kritische Ausgabe), Richard Beer- Hofmanns und Franziska zu Reventlows.
