Die ehemals englische Kolonie ist eines der wenigen Länder, das seinen Selbstfindungsprozess noch immer nicht abgeschlossen hat, viel zu groß sind die Unterschiede zwischen englisch- und französischsprachigem Teil und zwischen den einzelnen Kulturen, die sich im Laufe der Zeit ihre Existenz in Kanada aufgebaut haben. Es gibt Autoren, die wesentlich dazu beitragen und beigetragen haben, dass das Bewusstsein der Kanadier gestärkt wird, nationale Zugehörigkeit zu entwickeln. Zu ihnen zählen Robert Kroetsch, Rudy Wiebe, Margaret Atwood und Margaret Laurence. Letzterer wurde eine besondere Rolle in der Erschaffung eines Kanadabildes zugesprochen, was aus den zahlreichen Publikationen zu ihren Werken ersichtlich ist. Nachdem 1964 Laurence' erster Band des Manawaka Zyklus, The Stone Angel, veröffentlicht wurde, war ihr Name aus den Buchregalen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Das vorliegende Sachbuch versucht, anhand außergewöhnlicher Werke der Schriftstellerin, die kanadische Identität im Wandel der Zeit widerzuspiegeln. Dabei wird der Kampf um Herkunft, Rolle und Platz in der Gesellschaft der Protagonistinnen in besonderer Weise beleuchtet.
