Im Jahr 1981 reist die deutsche Kunsthistorikerin Prof. Dr. Edith Neubauer mit ihrem Ehemann Dr. Alfred Neubauer und ihrer 14jährigen Tochter Claudia in die damals für Ausländer schwer zugängliche georgische Hochgebirgsregion Swanetien im Südkaukasus, die auch heute noch für viele Europäer eine Terra incognita darstellt. Nach einigen vergeblichen Versuchen gelang es der Kunstwissenschaftlerin endlich, das von Mythen umwobene Land mit seinen hoch aufragenden Wehrtürmen und seinen kleinen Sippenkirchen kennen zu lernen und zu dieser im Kaukasus verborgenen Schatzkammer mittelalterlicher georgischer Kunstwerke vorzudringen. Mit diesem Vertrautwerden mit der Kunst Swanetiens verband sich in glücklicher Weise das Erlebnis der traumhaften Berglandschaft Swanetiens und die Begegnung mit dem Volk der Swanen, das neben christlichen auch heidnische Sitten und Gebräuche bewahrt. Das Leben der drei Reisenden in einer swanischen Familie in dem Hauptort Mestia in Oberswanetien, ihre freundliche Betreuung durch Restauratoren swanischer Kunstdenkmäler und zahlreiche Begegnungen mit den Swanen in abgelegenen Dörfern gab ihnen die Möglichkeit, sowohl tiefe Einblicke in die Kultur- und Kunstgeschichte Swanetiens als auch in das harte Alltagsleben seiner Bewohner zu nehmen. In ihrem mit zahlreichen Abbildungen versehenen Reisetagebuch spiegeln sich diese teils abenteuerlichen Erfahrungen wider.
About the Author: Neubauer, Alfred, Dr.rer.nat., Diplom-Chemiker, geb. 1933 in Eisfeld (Thüringen) arbeitete in den 60er Jahren auf dem Gebiet der organischen Stereochemie an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In den 70er und 80er Jahren war er an der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR sowohl mit der langfristigen Planung chemischer Forschung als auch mit chemiehistorischen Untersuchungen befasst. Sein Interesse an der Popularisierung der Chemie fand seinen Niederschlag in der Publikation "Chemie heute", Leipzig 1981 (Englische Ausgabe 1983 als "Chemistry today"). Seine wissenschaftshistorischen Publikationen beziehen sich auf Themen wie Deutsche Chemiker in der Sowjetunion nach dem 2.Weltkrieg, Zusammenhänge zwischen Chemie und Molekularbiologie sowie Chemie Nobelpreisträger (Buchpublikation "Bittere Nobelpreise" bei BoD-Verlag in 2005).
