Eine einzigartige militarische Organisation Seine Darstellung erschopft sich nicht in der Nacherzahlung militarischer Operationen, sondern erklart, warum Frankreich bis heute - trotz gelegentlicher starker Zweifel - an der Fremdenlegion festhalt. In chronologischer Abfolge zeigt er den Beitrag der Fremdenlegion zu den Kriegen Frankreichs im Vergleich zu dessen anderen Heeresformationen, und analysiert die militarischen Starken und Schwachen der Soldnertruppe in den jeweiligen Einsatzen. Durch seine historische Analyse werden Mechanismen und Traditionen offengelegt, die die Fremdenlegion in den letzten zwei Jahrhunderten herausgebildet hat, um bestimmte Kategorien von Mannern in Kriegs- wie Friedenszeiten anzulocken, langfristig an sich zu binden und zu mehr oder weniger effektiven Soldaten im Dienste Frankreichs zu formen. Vor allem deutschsprachige Legionare haben bei weitem den groaten Anteil unter ihren Soldaten gestellt. Dass Legionare ihre Vertrage nicht erneuerten oder in groaer Zahl desertierten, auch darauf wirft der Autor ein Licht. Zuletzt wird deutlich, dass entgegen ihren heutigen Bekundungen, sie sei eine multinationale Truppe, die jedem Bewerber vorurteilsfrei begegne, die Ausgrenzung bestimmter Ethnien und Religionsgruppen die Personalpolitik der Soldnertruppe wahrend eines Groateils ihrer Existenz bestimmt hat und bis heute Schatten auf die Institution wirft.
