About the Book

Functional Pavements is a collection of papers presented at the 6th Chinese-European Workshop (CEW) on Functional Pavement Design (Nanjing, China, October 18-21, 2020). The focus of the CEW series is on field tests, laboratory test methods and advanced analysis techniques, and cover analysis, material development and production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. The main areas covered by the book include:

- Asphalt binders for flexible pavements
- Asphalt mixture evaluation and performance
- Pavement construction and maintenance
- Pavement Surface Properties and Vehicle Interaction
- Cementitious materials for rigid pavements
- Pavement geotechnics and environment

Functional Pavements aims at contributing to the establishment of a new generation of pavement design methodologies in which rational mechanics principles, advanced constitutive models and advanced material characterization techniques shall constitute the backbone of the design process. The book will be much of interest to professionals, academics and practitioners in pavement engineering and related disciplines as it should assist them in providing improved road pavement infrastructure to their stakeholders.

About the Author:

Prof. Dr. Xianhua Chen is a full-time professor of Highway and Railway Engineering at Southeast University, First Prize Winner of Jiangsu Provincial Graduate Education Reform Achievements. He is the member of China Highway and Transportation Society, editing board member of Journal of Innovative Infrastructure Solutions, visiting scholar of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Texas (2008.08), RWTH Aachen University (2008.10-2009.10, 2012.12-2013.02), Delft University of Technology (2011.07-08,2015.06), UBC(2019.07-08). He was honored as Six Talent Peaks awarded by Jiangsu Provincial government. He originated the CN-EU Workshop on functional pavement(CEW), acted as organizing chair of 1st CEW(2010, Nanjing), vice-chair of 5th CEW(2018, Changsha) and the chair of 6th CEW(2020, Nanjing). He is also an active fellow in deck pavements and acted as the chair of pre-symposium workshop on advanced measurement and characterization on deck pavements (2012, Nanjing). His research topics cover advanced transportation infrastructure materials, asphalt concrete roadbed and waterproofing system for high-speed railway, pavement surface characteristics, functional pavement, and deck pavements.

Prof. Dr. Jun Yang is a professor of Highway and Railway Engineering at School of Transportation, Southeast University, China. She is a member of Highway and Transportation Society in Jiangsu Province. She obtained her PhD degree in highway, urban road and airport engineering from Southeast University in 1996. From March 2001 to August 2002, she was engaged in the high temperature stability and low temperature fatigue performance of polymer modified asphalt mixture for steel bridge deck pavement at Institute of Highway Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. She became a full professor at Southeast University in 2004. From September 2008 to August 2009, she was engaged in green road research at the Pavement and Transportation Technology Center of University of Waterloo, Canada. Over the years, she is highly recognized for her devoted research in new materials and technologies for transportation infrastructure construction. She has achieved fruitful results in long-span steel bridge asphalt paving, anti-rutting technology of asphalt concrete pavement, porous asphalt technology, and research and development of environmentally friendly bio-renewable materials. In recent years, she has successfully applied asphalt concrete technology to the construction of high-speed railway track, developed prefabricated environmentally friendly building materials, and explored the micro-level testing technology and application of asphalt and mixtures.

Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Markus Oeser is the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Head of the Chair of Highway Engineering and Director of the Institute of Highway Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Dresden University of Technology in 2004 and then carried out his postdoctoral research in Delft University of Technology until 2006. Between 2007 and 2011, he was a lecturer at the Institute of Geotechnics, Road Construction and Traffic Engineering, University of New South Wales (UNSW). From 2011, he has been the Chair-Professor of Highway Engineering and Director of the Institute of Highway Engineering at the RWTH Aachen University and he has been the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering from 2016. Over the years he has been devoted to the systematic study of mechanics design and new material development of pavement structures. He has got great achievements on the application of numerical methods (Finite Element Method, Boundary Element Method and Semi-Analytical Finite Element Method, etc.) on pavement engineering and construction of constitutive models of pavement materials (elasto-visco-plastic models, hypo-elastic models, critical state concept, etc.). Moreover, he has deeply investigated on the design method of high-performance permeable pavement structure, development of polyurethane material and characterization of mechanical behavior of asphalt mixture at multiscale.

Mr. Haopeng Wang is a PhD researcher at the Section of Pavement Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology. He obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from School of Transportation at Southeast University in 2013 and 2016, respectively. His research interests include multiphysics modelling of pavement materials and structures, polymer physics and chemistry, micromechanics of infrastructure materials, damage mechanisms in asphalt mixture (fracture, fatigue and healing), and sustainable pavement materials and technologies. He has published a series of high-quality academic journal/conference papers. He is also member of several international academic associations, e.g., Transportation Research Board (TRB), RILEM, International Society for Asphalt Pavements (ISAP), Academy of Pavement Science and Engineering (APSE), and International Association of Chinese Infrastructure Professionals (IACIP).
