Die Originalausgabe dieses Romans erschien tatsächlich bereits 1928. Ein Fakt, den man kaum zu glauben vermag, wenn man der spannenden Handlung folgt. Er wurde 1934 von den Nationalsozialisten verboten. Hanns Heinz Ewers erzählt darin von unerfüllter Liebe, Sexualität, von einer erfolgreichen Geschlechtsumwandlung und letztlich von der Liebe, die in einer homosexuellen Beziehung ihre Erfüllung findet. Wen wundert, dass dies alles den Nazis gar nicht gefallen hat? Ewers' Sprache ist modern, seine Themen aktueller den je!
About the Author: Hanns Heinz Ewers, geboren am 3. November 1871 in Düsseldorf als Hans Heinrich Ewers, war Schriftsteller, Filmemacher, Globetrotter und Kabarettist. Er entstammte einer künstlerlischen Familie. Ewers' Geschichten und Romane kreisen um die Themen Phantastik, Erotik, Kunst bzw. Künstler und Reisen in exotische Länder. Seine teils äußerst drastischen Darstellungen machten ihn zum skandalumwitterten Bestsellerautor. Gleichzeitig mußte er sich immer wieder gegen den Vorwurf zur Wehr setzen, seine Werke seien trivial, unmoralisch oder pornografisch. In seinem äußerst bewegten Leben vertrat Ewers auch einander wiedersprechende Positionen. So trat er 1931 der NSDAP bei und engagierte sich in der Propagandaarbeit, setzte sich aber zur selben Zeit für die Gleichberechtigung der Juden ein. Nach dem Röhm-Putsch am 30. Juni 1934 soll Evers auf der Liquidationsliste der SS gestanden haben. Mit den Nürnberger Gesetzen 1935 war die Entrechtung der deutschen Juden vollständig - Ewers begann seine Abkehr vom Regime und unterstützte seine jüdischen Freunde, indem er ihnen Ausreisevisa in die USA oder Großbritannien beschaffte. Bereits im Jahr zuvor war ihm ein generelles Publikationsverbot erteilt worden, das - nach endlosen Eingaben seinerseits - erst 1943, kurz vor seinem Tod, wieder aufgehoben wurde. Er starb, gesundheitlich stark angeschlagen und durch persönliche und berufliche Niederlagen geschwächt, am 12. Juni 1943 in seiner Wohnung in Berlin. Seine Asche wurde am 15. Oktober desselben Jahres auf dem Düsseldorfer Nordfriedhof beigesetzt.
