William Funnell wrote a fantastic account of William Dampier's privateering excursion into the South Seas in the ship St George, in the years 1703 And 1704. Funnell was a mutinous sea-dog who, along with his fellow band of fools, ensured the failure of Dampier's privateering expedition and marooned Dampier and loyal crew members in the South Sea. The mutineers alerted the Spaniards to Dampier's marooning by releasing the Spanish prisoners. Fully expecting Dampier to die in the South Seas, Funnell returned and prepared a manuscript in which he aggrandizes himself and denigrates Dampier.
This slanderous book prompted Dampier to publish his now infamous "vindication" in which Dampier heatedly points out Funnell's propensity for humbug. Dampier's Vindication is provided as a prologue in order to provide context from a more reliable narrator.
