Milano possiede uno dei sistemi teatrali più solidi e articolati sul territorio nazionale e, fuori della luce dei riflettori, si muove una scena indipendente estremamente varia, che mescola stili e approcci differenti sia dal punto di vista artistico sia da quello organizzativo. Il teatro indipendente produce un importante lavoro sul territorio, copre aree di ricerca poco battute dalle realtà ufficiali ed è un incubatore di modelli di diffusione e gestione culturale innovativi. Nonostante ciò, ogni giorno, lotta per la sua sopravvivenza in un settore privo di adeguate tutele per i lavoratori, nel quale è molto complesso dare continuità alle proprie attività. Questo libro segue i percorsi di alcuni artisti, compagnie e spazi indipendenti che hanno segnato fasi importanti della storia teatrale cittadina e nazionale, dagli anni Novanta all'esplosione della pandemia di Covid-19. Fra le sue pagine scorrono visioni di teatro, racconti di eventi formidabili, riflessioni sul senso dell'atto teatrale, esperimenti coraggiosi e analisi di come sia stato possibile realizzarli. Questo volume vuole essere un affresco su vent'anni di teatro sotterraneo e un manuale di sopravvivenza per chi abbia energie e vocazione per continuare a renderlo vivo.

Paolo Giorgio (Acqui Terme 1977 - vive a Milano) è regista e autore teatrale. I suoi lavori sono stati ospitati e prodotti da festival (Biennale Teatro di Venezia, Mittelfest, Asti Teatro, Pergine Festival) e teatri italiani (Zona K, Teatro i, Tieffe Teatro, Teatro Out Off, e altri). È tra i fondatori del Collettivo Circolo Bergman. Dal 2005 è docente di regia e recitazione presso la Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi di Milano, per la quale dal 2010 co-progetta e coordina i progetti internazionali.
