About the Book

Introduction to the American haiku The haiku is a minimalist poetic style developed in Japan centuries ago. The style has been typified by the use of 17 on, which are phonetic sounds, not syllables, and a juxtaposition of two images or concepts with a kireji (cutting word) delineating the contrast/comparison. Ever since English-speaking poets began to write haiku, the form has evolved, starting with the erroneous use of 17 syllables instead of on and the 3-line format. (Japanese haiku poets write in one continuous line.) Even contemporary Japanese poets do not adhere to the 17 on tradition. What is paramount is depicting the juxtaposition with economy of words. Jack Kerouac was fascinated by this art form and had this to say: "The American Haiku is not exactly the Japanese Haiku. The Japanese Haiku is strictly disciplined to seventeen syllables but since the language structure is different I don't think American Haikus (short three-line poems intended to be completely packed with Void of Whole) should worry about syllables because American speech is something again...bursting to pop." Above all, a Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella." The following haiku are not nature scenes; however, they do reflect the natural world. Due to our sound bite news culture and short attention span society, I wanted to direct the readers' attention to contemporary issues and observations with haiku's quick draw accuracy. Thank you for reading. Charles Lee McBride
About the Author: Charles McBride is a social worker by trade and a poet at heart. His poetry is his form of meditation, a cathartic escape. His words are steeped in the subconscious, sweetened with a dash of altered reality, and best served piping hot with a pouch of top shelf, roll-your-own shag. Some of his work has been published in The Refined Savage Poetry Review, Inscribed, Variations and "Song of Herself" was awarded 3rd place in WTF Magazine's (now defunct) 2007 Poetry Contest.
