About the Book

Phillip Moore's book The Future of Children describes the work of an innovative independent school in Michigan and the principles of a love-based education. This book grew out of over four decades of direct experience with children who have been educated in a school that was based on love. These children have grown up to be very different kinds of people. Their direct connection to the natural world has influenced them to feel a deep connection with life. Their sensory rich education has given them a life long love for creativity, for doing and making things of beauty and function. Their abilities to collaborate with others has given them the direct experience of accomplishing projects that live beyond the possibility of an individual. Their ability to do their own thinking and to be in love with life long learning has given them the confidence to live in a world of shifting complexity and deep uncertainty. The lessons and the stories of this school provide us with insights and the creative inspiration that will fuel new ways of teaching and new ways of learning. This book is essential for parents and educators who are dedicated to shifting from the dominant industrial (failing) educational paradigm to a new paradigm that is based on love, trust, and deep inter-connection."This book is graced by a wisdom that is rare and insight that is profound. Its pages speak to a new paradigm of educating and treating children. It suggests a New Way, an Enlightened Way. Those who dare to follow its precepts will not only transform the lives of those they teach and touch, but will themselves be forever revolutionized at their core. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!"--Shefali Tsabary, Ph.D. NY Times bestselling author of The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family"Wow, wow, wow. This book is mind-blowing! The whole concept of the school is based on love"-- Ram DassSpiritual teacher, cultural revolutionary, author of Be Here Now"I take great joy in commending Phillip Moore and his Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center to you. I'm personally convinced of the competence of Moore and his associates, of their integrity and of their realistic commitment to society. Warmly, faithfully, -- Buckminster FullerApril 20, 1979
About the Author: Phillip Moore began teaching at Upland Hills Farm School in 1971 and served as its director for 42 years. During this time Phil developed a profound learning community for the students, teachers, and board. This culture of curiosity developed into a synergetic collaboration between the staff members that transcended most traditional models of educational institutions. Moore also led a team to raise 1.5 million dollars and secure 31 acres of land, upon which he led teams to design and build five innovative buildings for their needs. These include a wind-powered Geodesic Dome, a schoolhouse that contains six classrooms, library, and kitchen, a wind and solar powered, sod-roofed Ecological Awareness Center, and a performance theatre that seats 150 people. Phillip and his wife Karen raised two amazing children both of whom attended the school full term. They are blessed with five wonderful grandchildren. Now that his tenure as hands-on director of the school has ended, he has begun new ventures of his "re-wirement." This includes developing a team to guide and innovate new education initiatives through his firm Trimtab. Follow Moore's work at www.TrimTab.in.
