Dass sich die Schule als gesellschaftliche Institution zwischen den beiden Polen des 'Förderns' und 'Auslesens' bewegt, gehört zum tradierten Wissenskorpus von Bildungssoziologie und Schulforschung. Diese strukturfunktionalistisch inspirierte Sichtweise hat zudem längst in Alltagstheorien diffundiert und findet 1 sich auch in Schriften für die Lehrerinnen- und Lehrerfortbildung wieder. Die Schule - dies die Auffassung - hat nicht allein den pädagogischen Auftrag, jede Schülerin und jeden Schüler individuell zu fördern, sie ist auch dem Prinzip der Auslese verpflichtet. So nüchtern und einfach sich diese doppelte Aufgabe - schreiben lässt, so heftig sind die Kontroversen, die das Begriffspaar 'Fördern und Auslesen' beziehungsweise die politischen Vorstellungen, die sich damit verbinden, in der Öffentlichkeit ausgelöst haben. Wie die Geschichte der Bildungspolitik deutlich macht, kreisen die Diskuss- nen über die Gestaltung des Bildungswesens, vor allem auch der Volksschule, immer wieder um die Frage, ob genug und 'richtig' gefördert beziehungsweise ob genug (oder allenfalls: zu viel) und 'richtig' selegiert wird. Die in der A- bruchstimmung der 1960er und 1970er Jahre ausgelösten Debatten waren von der Irritation gespeist, dass die schulische Praxis dem Selbstverständnis der modernen Gesellschaft widerspreche, wonach alle Menschen dieselben B- dungschancen haben und soziale Ungleichheit durch die Schule abgebaut wird.
