About the Book

August Böck erzählt in diesem seit 1839 erstmals wieder verlegten Buch seine außergewöhnliche Lebensgeschichte. Dieser einfache Mann, dem 1809 durch seine Vaterlandsliebe und seine Treue jegliche Rechte abgesprochen werden sollten, wurde zu einer Strafe verurteilt, die eher in der Antike oder dem finsteren Mittelalter zu erwarten ist - die Degradierung zum Sklaven auf der französischen Galeere! Er erzählt in packenden, einfachen Worten seine Geschichte, die ihn schließlich wieder ans Licht und letztlich wieder nach Hause bringen sollte. Ein besonderes Kapitel der napoleonischen Ära!
About the Author: August Böck wurde im Jahre 1785 zu Roitzsch in Sachsen geboren. Nachdem er in Bitterfeld die Ausbildung als Musikus abgeschlossen hatte, trug er sich mit dem Gedanken im Jahre 1806 als Trompeter in das 11.Kürassier-Regiment einzutreten. Aufgrund fehlender Vakanzen und wegen des unglücklichen Ausgangs des Feldzuges der Jahre 1806/1807 konnte dies jedoch nicht in die Tat umgesetzt werden. Er trat schließlich als Trompeter in das Freikorps des Ferdinand Freiherr von Schill, machte mit diesem den Feldzug des Jahres 1809 mit und geriet schließlich im Mai dieses Jahres in Stralsund in Kriegsgefangenschaft. Da Kaiser Napoleon den Mitgliedern des so genannten "Schwarzen Korps" die Anerkennung als kriegsgefangene Soldaten absprach, wurde er schließlich mit seinen Kameraden als Straßenräuber zu einer 25-jährigen Haftstrafe auf den Galeeren zu Toulon verurteilt. Nach 22-monatiger Gefangenschaft wurde er schließlich benadigt und gnadenvoll "unter die Fahnen Frankreichs" aufgenommen, das heißt, er sollte durch seinen Eintritt in das französische Heer den immer größer werdenden Bedarf an Menschenmaterial ausgleichen. Durch die erste Abdankung Napoleons im Jahre 1814 konnte er endlich nach Hause zurückkehren, musste jedoch in Luxemburg Dienste im 24.preußischen Infanterie-Regiment nehmen, mit dem er dann noch den Feldzug 1815 in Belgien und Frankreich mitmachte. Seine Memoiren erlebten bis 1839 drei Auflagen und haben auch in der Gegenwart nichts von ihrer Spannung und ihrer Eigentümlichkeit verloren!
