About the Book

Libertad de conciencia, diversidad, normalizacion y respeto a las minorias religiosas son conceptos ligados a algunos derechos humanos fundamentales hoy plenamente reconocidos en el mundo occidental. Sin embargo, en Espana estos conceptos han estado dramaticamente asociados hasta hace muy pocas decadas a una realidad muy diferente: monolitismo religioso excluyente, persecucion al disidente, intolerancia religiosa y resistencia por motivos de conciencia han escrito las paginas de nuestra historia practicamente hasta la Constitucion de 1978. Galicia Insumisa se adentra en el naciente protestantismo gallego decimononico y analiza su implantacion e impacto en el solar galaico, teniendo en cuenta dos perspectivas de analisis: por un lado, describe la formacion de los nucleos protestantes y los descubre en sus estrategias de implantacion y supervivencia, en su organizacion interna, su sociabilidad como "familia de la fe" y sus convicciones mas profundas, aquellas que, como su concepto de la muerte y del paso al mas alla, les enfrenta mas dramaticamente con el entorno social circundante. Por otro lado, se centra en descubrir las razones historicas de la manifiesta incapacidad de todo un pais para aceptar de manera normalizada la diversidad religiosa, que interpreta la pluralidad de credos como una espantosa traicion a la identidad nacional. Asi queda demostrado que, lejos de tratarse de un fenomeno propio de un segmento acotado de la poblacion, con una mentalidad trasnochada y nostalgica de las viejas glorias del imperio, se trata de la accion que vincula de manera dinamica los antiguos estereotipos antiprotestantes con las muy vigentes estrategias para mantener la unidad religiosa, monolitica y excluyente a toda costa. Ademas, participan de ello amplios sectores sociales, politicos y culturales en toda Espana. De este modo, el protestantismo desde mediados del siglo XIX vino a convertirse -sin pretenderlo, pero de manera irremediable-, en silencioso protagonista de la resistencia pacifica y tenaz en la lucha por la modernizacion del pais.
