About the Book

The Education Act 1902 caused the Ganton School to form a new Managers Committee. The Ganton School Managers' Minute Book recorded all of the minutes of this committee from their first meeting on the 9th April 1903 until 1941. It additionally included copies of key letters sent and received by the School Managers. The minute book records how the School Managers managed the school during these years. The details include how they dealt with daily issues, such as hiring school staff, deciding on their pay, and on more than one occasion disciplining the head teacher! It also covers their deliberations about organising the purchase of school furniture, and maintaining and repairing the school. Between 1903 and 1912, a great deal of committee time is spent pondering the issue of over-crowding at the school and the pressure on them to enlarge the school. The school was a central part of Ganton Village life, and the minutes show that the school rooms were used for numerous village clubs and events. World events also show their traces within the minutes, such as the King's Coronation, the fear of aircraft bombing the school during the First World War, and issues relating to evacuees in the Second World War. Whilst this transcript of the Managers' Minute Book is a treasure trove of information for anyone connected with Ganton, it will also be of interest to anyone wanting to get a feel for what it might have been like trying to manage a school at the beginning of the last century.
