Résumé Charles Monselet, surnommé le roi des gastronomes par ses contemporains, passionné de gastronomie livre ici sous le signe de l'humour un des plus charmants livre du XIXème sur les joies de la table. Charles Monselet, né à Nantes le 30 avril 1825 et mort à Paris le 19 mai 1888, est un écrivain épicurien, journaliste, romancier, poète et auteur dramatique français, surnommé le roi des gastronomes par ses contemporains. Il est avec Grimod de la Reynière, le Baron Brisse et Joseph Favre l'un des premiers journalistes gastronomiques. Biographie Il n'habite à Nantes que les neuf premières années de sa vie. Après une jeunesse bordelaise, sa carrière littéraire se passe à Paris. La mort de son ami Baron Brisse au cours d'un dîner lui vaut ce mot d'esprit (citation probablement apocryphe): Passons tout de même à table ! Il n'a jamais aimé les fricots trop cuits . Instantanés littéraires, nouvelles folâtres, romans d'amour et policiers, sa bibliographie compte une quarantaine de volumes pleins de couleur, de gaieté et de naturel, où la femme a souvent un rôle central, notamment dans La Franc-Maçonnerie des femmes (1856), un récit policier touffu sur fond d'intrigue sentimentale. Dans le Paris de 1843, le jeune et ambitieux Philippe Beyle s'éprend de la belle cantatrice Marianna, conquiert son coeur puis, ayant satisfait sa vanité, la délaisse. Humiliée, la chanteuse use de son pouvoir au sein d'une franc-maçonnerie féminine, sorte de police parallèle dirigée par et pour des femmes, pour lancer la toute-puissante société secrète sur les traces de son amant afin d'assouvir sa vengeance. Son poème Les Petites Blanchisseuses connaît une grande notoriété au XIXe siècle. Il est très souvent évoqué par les journalistes parisiens dans leurs articles parlant des blanchisseuses au moment de leur fête: la Mi-Carême. De ce poème libertin ils ne citent jamais que le premier quatrain, très correct, qui ne laisse pas entrevoir la suite: Les petites blanchisseuses Que l'on voit, chaque lundi, Aux pratiques paresseuses Porter le linge à midi, Il est l'un des auteurs du pastiche le Parnassiculet contemporain. Il fut l'ami de Jean-Gabriel Capot de Feuillide auquel il consacra une critique favorable dans la Lorgnette littéraire, Dictionnaire des Grands et des petits auteurs de mon temps. Il est le rédacteur en chef et fondateur du journal le Gourmet. Il est inhumé au cimetière du Père-Lachaise (66e division).
