Sie dienen zur Weiterentwicklung von Spielideen und helfen bei Lösungen für spezifische Probleme. Die Anwendung von Daten im Profisport führt bereits so weit, dass seit 2015 an der Sporthochschule Köln ein eigener Masterstudiengang besteht, der sich mit der datenbezogenen Spielanalyse beschäftigt. Standardmäßig basieren diese Daten auf durch Videoanalyse gesammelte Daten und bewerten die physische, technische und taktische Leistung eines Spielers. Daraus werden Prozess und Trainingsoptimierungen gewonnen. Das volle Potenzial, das durch Daten erreichbar ist, ist allerdings noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft. Vor allem bei der objektiven Bewertung eines Spielers werden immer neue sogenannte Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) entwickelt, die stetig genauere Informationen über die Leistung eines Spieler geben sollen. Es reicht längst nicht mehr aus, einen Spieler anhand seiner gewonnen Zweikämpfe oder erfolgreich gespielten Pässen zu bewerten. Viele wichtiger ist es beispielsweise zu wissen, wie oft ein Spieler Zweikämpfe im Bereich des Mittelkreises gewinnt oder wie viele Pässe er aus dem defensiven Mittelfeld erfolgreich an einen Mitspieler gebracht hat. Auch Werte wie die zurückgelegte Strecke pro Spiel wirken wichtig, geben aber nie die wirkliche Leistung des Spielers wieder. Ein konkreter Fall von falscher Einschätzung der Daten führte 2011 erstmals zu Empörung. Die Münchener Impire AG analysierte ein Bundesligaspiel des 1. FC Köln gegen den VfL Wolfsburg und stellte dabei fest, dass Lukas Podolski mit nur 8,6 gelaufenen Kilometern als laufschwächster Spieler des Spiels auf dem Platz stand.
