About the Book

Der Autor hat in den 90er Jahren des letzten Jahrtausends etwa zehn Jahre in Irland gelebt. In dieser Zeit wurden die Erzählungen dieser Buchreihe niedergeschrieben. In diesen Erzählungen werden Tatsächliches und Fiktion vermischt. Es geht um das traditionelle Geschichtenerzählen der alten Zeit in Irland. Die Idee dazu kam ihm bei einem Geschichtenerzähler Festival in dem westirischen Städtchen Kiltimagh, dem er hier zum ersten Mal beiwohnte. Seine Anregungen holte er sich aber aus den Erzählungen der Menschen an den knisternden Torffeuern, die zu den Geschichten eine mystische Atmosphäre zauberten. Vor allem aber geht es mal wieder um das Geschichtenerzählen selbst: Wie im ersten Band lässt der Autor auch in diesem zweiten Band fiktive Erzähler zu Wort kommen. Real ist nur die Art der Erzählung, wie sie der Autor erlebt hat, und zum Teil auch der Hintergrund der erzählten Geschichten. Der Autor überlässt es dem aufmerksamen Leser zu beurteilen, welche Geschichten einen realen Hintergrund haben könnten. Aber Vorsicht, man kann sich leicht täuschen. In der ersten Geschichte findet sich der Erzähler in der Todeszelle wieder. Er soll ein Elternmörder sein. In der Titelgeschichte wagt sich der Erzähler eines Tages trotz Höhenangst auf den legendären One Man's Pass an den Klippen des Slieve League und hat ausgerechnet an einer besonders engen Stelle, an der keine zwei Menschen aneinander vorbeikommen, eine gefährliche Begegnung mit einem Hünen von Mann, der sich hier oben sicher bewegt. Keiner will zurückweichen, aber, hat der Protagonist eine Wahl? Er ist voller Misstrauen und Furcht; vor allem möchte er den Fremden beim Zurückgehen nicht hinter sich wissen. Da macht der Fremde einen überraschenden Vorschlag. Er möchte in einer Art von Gottesurteil, dem man sich unbedingt beugen muss, eine Entscheidung herbeiführen. In der dritten Geschichte nimmt der Erzähler in Kinnegad zu später Stunde bei Dunkelheit und stürmischem Wetter eine alte Anhalterin mit nach Moate und wird
