About the Book

She stood there in the pitch blackness before turning to leave through the crate lined aisle in the back alley. She had taken no more than three steps when her foot caught on something and she fell flat. She had stumbled over something lying across the little path between the crates. Using her hands to feel around, she was going to try to push the object to the side but when she touched it she recoiled in horror because it was a man... a dead man. Quickly, she scooted backward on her butt to get as far away as possible. Scrambling to her feet, she ran back to the backdoor and started pounding her fists against it. Madam Angelique had already left her office so no one heard her frantic beating. She turned and moved as quickly as she could to sidled past the dead body trying to get to the street. But, just as she was about to step into the light of the street, someone grabbed her from behind. She started to scream and a hand immediately clamped over her mouth. "Don't scream! Listen to me. I'm not going to hurt you. All I want is to take you upstairs for a while." She frantically shook her head and was mumbling something he couldn't understand. As he slowly started to remove the hand he was holding tightly over her mouth she bit down as hard as she could into the flesh between his thumb and forefinger. Terrified, she struggled to get free of his grip. She kicked and fought violently but he steered clear of her efforts only grasping her tighter. She realized there was no way she could break his hold on her and that she had to convince him to let go of her. She also feared if she screamed it was certain he would hurt her or worse yet, she'd end up dead like that man in the alley. When he realized his mistake, that he had mistakenly approached the wrong woman, he slowly released her. The instant she felt his hands relax she fled to the light of the street. Heading back down the alley his foot brushed against what Genevieve had already discovered. Examining the body, he now knew why the girl had been absolutely horrified. A quick once over of the body with his hands, told him there were no bleeding wounds. Kneeling by the dead man, Victor's mind quickly processed the situation and, under the circumstances, the girl was the only other person he knew of, as far as he knew, that could have done the guy in.
