About the Book

Sir Georg Solti was a legendary conductor whose remarkable career spanned over seven decades, and he is renowned for winning **31 Grammy Awards**, making him one of the most awarded artists in Grammy history until Beyoncé surpassed his record in 2023.

Born György Stern on October 21, 1912, in Budapest, Hungary, Solti studied with eminent composers like Béla Bartók and Ernő Dohnányi. His promising career was interrupted by the rise of Nazism, leading him to flee Hungary in 1938 due to anti-Jewish laws. After a challenging period during World War II, where he worked as a pianist in Switzerland, Solti resumed conducting post-war, eventually becoming the musical director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

In 1969, he became the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 22 years, during which he elevated the orchestra's profile through international tours and acclaimed recordings. His interpretation of Richard Wagner's *Der Ring des Nibelungen* is considered one of the greatest recordings ever made, receiving accolades from *Gramophone* and the BBC's Music Magazine.

Solti's contributions to the music world were recognized with numerous honors, including a knighthood and the title of honorary citizen in Castiglione della Pescaia, Italy. He also served as music director for prestigious orchestras like the Orchestre de Paris and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
