La société française des « années Pompidou » se caractérise par la profondeur et la diversité des mutations qui ont affecté les modes de vie des Français. Induites par la croissance économique, les progrès technologiques et l'avènement de la consommation de masse, ces mutations n'allèrent pas sans tensions et difficultés d'adaptation, soumettant l'État et le président de la République au défi d'en gérer les enjeux.
Loin de tout conservatisme et des tentations dirigistes, Georges Pompidou eut la volonté d'assumer la modernité dans laquelle s'engageait la société française, mais sans pour autant renoncer à l'aiguiller. Qu'il s'agisse d'impulser une adaptation de l'espace national et des services de l'État, d'accompagner l'émergence d'un nouveau quotidien des Français dans leur mobilité, leur logement, leur consommation ou leur rapport à la santé, Georges Pompidou inscrit sa politique dans une volonté de faciliter et d'encourager ces mutations. Tout en étant soucieux de préserver un équilibre entre les responsabilités de l'État et l'autonomie des dynamiques de la société, Georges Pompidou, fidèle à la tradition gaulliste, ne renonça pas à anticiper une modernisation similaire de l'industrie à travers la promotion des technologies nationales.
Confrontant les analyses des universitaires avec les témoignages des acteurs de l'époque, cet ouvrage dresse le portrait d'une France achevant la mutation des Trente Glorieuses; il retrace l'articulation entre les innovations qui ont marqué la société française et la volonté du Président Pompidou de les orienter.
Cet ouvrage est né du colloque organisé à Paris par l'Association Georges Pompidou les 18 et 19 mars 2005, à l'Assemblée nationale, sous la direction de Pascal Griset. Les textes ont été réunis par Armelle Demagny-Van Eyseren et Émilie Willaert.
