Les années Pompidou, tant à Matignon qu'à l'Élysée, furent celles d'importantes mutations qui s'inscrivent dans le contexte des Trente Glorieuses et qui, assumées et voulues parfois même par l'État, affectent en profondeur l'agriculture et le monde rural.
Les campagnes sont au cœur des préoccupations de Georges Pompidou. Ses origines familiales, son action en tant que député du Cantal mais aussi l'importance politique des ruraux dans la France des années 1960 et 1970 apparaissent essentielles pour comprendre cet attachement. Au niveau national, les Gouvernements successifs sont préoccupés par le développement d'outils destinés à moderniser le secteur de l'agriculture et consentent des efforts qui portent notamment sur le crédit agricole et sur l'enseignement. Dans les débats européens également, les questions agricoles occupent une place de tout premier ordre en cette période d'élaboration de la Politique agricole commune.
Confrontant les analyses des universitaires et les témoignages des acteurs de l'époque, cet ouvrage aborde les mutations que connaissent les campagnes à travers une dimension régionale et retrace, pour la première fois, la vision de Georges Pompidou sur le monde des campagnes, d'un point de vue politique, mais aussi économique, social et culturel, voire esthétique.
Il rassemble les Actes du colloque organisé par l'Association Georges Pompidou, au Conseil général d'Aurillac, les 8 et 9 juin 2006, sous la direction de Gilbert Noël et d'Émilie Willaert.
About the Author: Les responsables de la publication: Gilbert Noël est Professeur d'histoire contemporaine à l'Université de Rennes 2 et titulaire d'une Chaire Jean Monnet sur l'histoire de la construction européenne. Il est l'auteur des ouvrages Du pool vert à la politique agricole commune ; France, Allemagne et « Europe verte » ; Le Conseil de l'Europe et l'agriculture, Idéalisme politique européen et réalisme économique national (1949-1957).
Émilie Willaert est Professeur certifiée d'histoire-géographie, chargée de recherches à l'Association Georges Pompidou. Elle prépare une thèse de doctorat à l'Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), sur « La France et la Banque européenne d'investissement (1957-1986) » et a réalisé avec Éric Bussière un ouvrage sur La Banque de développement du Conseil de l'Europe.
Gilbert Noël et Émilie Willaert ont par ailleurs déjà publié un ouvrage thématique de documents d'archives sur les questions agricoles et rurales durant cette période: Georges Pompidou, une certaine idée de la modernité agricole et rurale (P.I.E. Peter Lang, 2006).
